Distance Casting Tips From The Dogg

Casting for distance.

The key to distance casting is timing.   Surf casters know that 1 meter is a blessing. Here is the best way to gain an extra meter or an extra 30, depending on your experience. Try it, you may suprise mates and yourself.

Have the right gear.I use 12pd line and a 40pd shock trace. The shock trace is twice as long as the rod and joined to the main line so you can really put some muscle in to the cast. The rod is a 12ft surf caster and the reel a large bait feeder type eggbeater. (Personal preference.)

1.Place your feet shoulder width apart, in an orthadox boxers stance left foot pointing at where you want the cast to land. Have about 40cms of line from rod tip to sinker and open the bail arm.

2.With a smooth motion lay the sinker onto the sand behind you with the right arm extended, index finger securing the line and the left hand at the base of the rod,at chin height.body should be comfortably positioned leaning slightly back

3.With a smooth motion the right hand pushes forward like its throwing a javlin the left keeping the rod in a 45deg upwards motion and pulling in the same direction as the right.this places initial forward kinetic energy onto the sinker before the cast is even made.

4.Transfer your forward momentum from step 5 to the front foot and When the right hand passes in line with the shoulder push up and pull down with the left sharply.when you feel the rod is at approx 45degrees release the line on your right index. this is a major failing point in a cast bad timing. it should hurt a bit.The line should slightly burn due to the force you just put in,to early and it wont, too late and it will break the line. judgement comes with practice.

5.Your right hand should be extended to head height and the left placed at the hip bone.Do not move from this position while the line is screaming from the reel. as you can loose meters on the cast by placing un even pressure on the line.follow through Just like a golfer!!

6.if the cast is too long you can drop it short in flight by putting slight drag on the spooling line with a finger.use the fleshy bit in a way that wont get tangled!
