BREAM

BEST BAITS:     Yabbies, worms, fish flesh, mullet gut and pilchards

BEST TACKLE:
Light Estuary Rod 6.6ft-12ft (8-12ft if you can find one); 8 lb Braid or Nylon;                             N0.01Sinker;Size 6 to 0/1 Beaked Bait Holder Hook.

BEST RIG:
      Sinker straight to Hook.

Bream like to live in rough snag infested areas that are relatively shallow 6-30ft deep. They are a school fish and feed in areas that give them some cover from predators like oyster leases, rock walls bridge and jetty pylons. When fishing from a jetty or other man made structure use the fish you feet approach because a lot of good fish will be right beneath you.

Bream bite best at night and at dawn a few nights before and up to the full and new moon.During winter months you will find bream feeding and hanging about river and estuary mouths and sand bars in the surf.Fish when the breeze is from off shore and the water is a little choppy and murky for best results.Remember they like cover from predators: You being one of them.

A round running No.01 sinker in direct contact with the hook is best to exploit the rough habitat areas that bream prefer and give good sensitivity to the angler and bait movement in the tide. The sinker so close to the bait does not frighten the plucky Bream as you may expect. You can tie a swivel a meter above the sinker to reduce line twist if you wish but its not totally necessary. When fishing the closer surf gutter, the ones everybody wades through to cast, and the ones that hold good Bream, Flathead ,and Trev's, use a short trace about 30-40cms tied to a swivel and N0.01sinker above the swivel so the bait can freely move in the tide.

When setting the hook try not to alarm the school as much as possible.A few winds and a gentle smooth motion back with the rod tip will put pressure on your clean sharp hooks and you have a fish. Try not to strike at the fish, you may catch one but loose an afternoon of catch and release with the others.

His bite is fairly predictable and not unlike that of a pan sized snapper, catch a few and you will learn to predict when the best time to set will be.Bait presentation is very important as the pickers will clean you out faster than a week at the Ritz.Use the right amount of bait and have enough barb showing to hook up.

Tight lines.
