Use Google Maps to zoom in on an intended fishing site to gauge the water conditions,current and substructure and stucture before you even wet a line. Research is always good and the birds eye veiw of a spot you've never tried or an old one can disclose its secrets.Google maps will even give you directions on how to get there. WHEN FISHING A SURF HOLE CAST TO THE DOWN CURRENT SIDE:

This makes sure that the bait is presented in such a way that it looks as though it was been uncovered by the wave action.Do Not cast directly into the hole as fish dont like sand in their gills and stay a respectable distance, and sand may cover your bait and sinker causing gear loss

BUY A REEL WITH A SPARE SPOOL:

 Not only does this signifiy quality to some extent, it also makes your current gear more flexible, to help you adapt to change in tactics or conditions:you can have two breaking strengths spooled,one for rocky ground one for beach, I have a spool of 20pd Nylon and a spool of 12pd braid for my reel,each with a SHOCK TRACE of 50pd.

TIE ON A SHOCK TRACE: A shock trace is a larger diameter line tied to a smaller diameter line to enable you to put more effort into a cast without fear of gear loss.

WASH ALL REELS AFTER TRIPS WITH FRESH WATER AND OIL BEFORE PUTTING AWAY: Make sure you do this.Very over looked by many of us but if you just spent $200 on a decent reel you want it to last the year.
