TYPES OF HOOKS

Most anglers think a hook is a hook but a hook is the most important part of the fisherman’s tackle box. There are thousands of different hook type patterns out there, some not all are designed to catch fishermen and not the fish so when selecting your hooks you should keep that in the back of your mind. Become familiar several popular patterns and their applications to your style. Different fish require different sizes hooks and its good practice to drop a hook size when getting bites but not hooking up. So carry several sizes in your tackle box

O’Shaunessy Fish Hook

A good general purpose hook for most fishing situations. Holds cubed bait well but most other bait forms averagely in semi strong currents: A good lure hook for sporting fishers who prefer a single to treble hook.

Aberdeen Fish Hook

A good hook for catching bait size fish as ease of hook removal is provided by the long shank. Good for fast rebaiting. Also good for targeting fish which require careful handling such as tropical fish with spines that can inflict nasty injuries. All you have to do is hold the eye of the hook and use a hook removing device or pliers grab the bend and push.

Circle Hook (BEST SNELLED ON TO LINES)

An excellent hook for set lines(check local regulations before setting set lines). These hooks require little effort from the angler and produce good hook up rates. Often catching fish on unattended rods. This shape is a Japanese design but has been used in Polynesia for thousands of years. Research has been conducted in the Hauraki Gulf that suggests these hook produce 30% greater hook ups when snelled.THE MOST IMPORTANT THING WITH THESE HOOKS IS NOT TO STRIKE. Hard I know but essential.

Live Bait Hook

The low profile of the live bait hook has been designed to fool as best as possible the keen eye of predatory fish. Used to secure live fish as bait for wary fast moving pelagic and other fish such as John Dory which only take live fish.

Kahle Fish Hook (Best used Snelled)

A good hook due to the wide gape. This allows more bait to be used in proportion to hooks in the same size. Excellent for pan sized snapper and bream but its thin gauge wire makes it likely to bend on larger fish.

Bait holder

An Excellent all round multipurpose hook. Small beak point pointing at the eye makes for positive hook ups the barbs on the back of the shank prevent bait from slipping down on the hook with the current and spoiling the well presented bait you just spent time creating
