Most successful fishermen know that you need to find the fish to have a chance at catching them. This page will help you in that endeavor .On the surf, you need to find gutters rips holes and channels. The best and easiest way to locate these is by taking 10 minutes to watch the wave patterns.
GUTTER and RIPS. These are the roads of the beach; fish use them to give them cover from birds and predators and to get in close to the beach for a munch. They are easy to spot, once you know what you are looking for. These are the best to use from a fishing perspective because you can burley them up and have it dispersed over a greater area due to its strong current. Not so great for swimming but excellent for fishing! Rock ledges are also roads that fish use to get in closer to the beach. They move along picking up food as they move in and a good fishing strategy is to burley a gutter that leads up to and along a rock ledge.
HOLES: Waves break in shallow water and roll over deeper water. If the waves start breaking and there is a spot where the wave does not break where it should, that is a very likely sign that there is deeper water in that spot. If the waves break behind it to the sides and in front, then you have found yourself a hole my friend. Cast you line as close to the edges as possible, this is where the wave action uncovers shellfish like pipis crabs and soft creatures like sand worms.
River Mouths: The mouths of rivers can make for exceptional fishing. When the white bait are running, fast moving fish like Salmon (Kahawai in New Zealand) move in and ambush the large schools of translucent fish. During other times of the year, Flooding further up steam dislodges foods normally unavailable to sea fish like insects ,fresh water crustaceans even dead livestock and animals can be washed down and provide a bounty for hungry fish. River mouths are great places to cast metal lures such as Toby’s and Hex Wobblers because of the bait fish that tend to congregate around these areas.
The most successful baits at river mouths are fish based. Pilchards and cut fillets of mullet and mackerel being the best. Also try Salted Pipi. or squid as a last resort.Check BAITfor salting recipe.
Gear For The Beach: The Beach is hard on gear so it has to be of good quality sturdy and resistant to saltwater and sand. The rod you select should be as long as you can practically handle. For most Fisho's this is about a 10'-12 foot rod, some go as far as 16 foot and use them well. When choosing your rod have in mind the size of fish you are likely to encounter, from smallest to biggest. You want to get the best of every fish you catch, dont use a cannon to hunt a rabbit.
I like a Fast actioned 12 foot surf rod 12lb nylon or braid and a 4-5 oz SAND GRABBER SINKER on the pendulum rig for most circumstances.
3 of the best rods I recommend use are:
NITRO Surf rod (my dream rod at the moment)
